About
The English Riding Control Patterns is the closest thing that local and 4H shows will have to a dressage pattern. These patterns are larger (often taking up the entire arena) and focus on smooth transitions and rider's knowledge of correct gaits, diagonals, and leads. There are several more patterns than what I demonstrated here that can be found online if you look at the Colorado State 4H rule book online under the English Riding Control section but this will give you a start. Transitions should always occur between the horse's shoulder and the rider's leg to be considered "on time" and not receive a deduction. There are a few differences in allowed tack and desired headset between 4H and USEF dressage so read the rule book and understand the difference between "true" english riding and more AQHA style english (which 4H adheres to). I explained some of these differences in my basic english courses so review those as needed. It is best to have done the English basic and Beginner English Equitation courses before you attempt these patterns. You can also work these patterns in your western tack to have variations for western dressage if you are thinking of going that route as well.
